What is carbide?

Carbide cutting tools

Cemented carbide is made of metal carbides such as tungsten carbide and titanium carbide as the hard phase, cobalt and other metals as the binder, and is made by powder metallurgy. It has high hardness, low thermal conductivity, and low It is a hard and brittle material at room temperature, showing different grinding requirements from steel and other materials.

In the past, hard alloys were often ground with green silicon carbide grinding wheels, but because the hardness of silicon carbide abrasive grains is not high enough, the abrasive grains are easy to wear and passivate when grinding cemented carbide, resulting in increased grinding force and excessive grinding temperature. High, resulting in defects such as cracks on the surface of the tool. At the same time, the threshing of the silicon carbide grinding wheel is too fast, the shape of the grinding wheel is not easy to maintain, and the tool size is unstable. Diamond and CBN grinding wheels always used for cutting tools production, especially resin diamond grinding wheel and hybrid diamond grinding wheel.

The geometry of rotary tools is ground in several production steps:

Typical grinding steps start from tool blank preparation, bar cutting, centerless grinding, chamfering, step grinding, and then tool grooving, tooth edge cleaning and relief grinding.

In the grooving process of cemented carbide tools, most of them use ultra-high temperature resin bonded diamond grinding wheels, and adopt the traditional grinding process with large depth of cut and small feed. Due to the limitations of the resin bonded diamond grinding wheel, the greater the depth of cut, the greater the grinding resistance and the more grinding heat generated during the grinding process, which affects the processing efficiency of the tool slotting and the surface quality of the tool.

11V9 diamond grinding wheel is a commonly used grinding wheel on five-axis tool grinding machine.

Fluting grinding wheel (hybrid bond diamond grinding wheel) is mainly used for fluting cemented carbide tools; it is made of special metal bond material, which can guarantee the wear resistance and sharpness of the slotting grinding wheel to a certain extent, suitable for large cutting deep, high-feed grinding of carbide tools greatly improves the slotting efficiency of carbide solid tools. When using this grinding wheel for grooving, the workpiece will not have cracks, burns and thermal deformation due to the small grinding resistance and low grinding temperature. At the same time, due to the small loss of the grinding wheel, the dressing cycle and service life of the grinding wheel are prolonged. Due to the characteristics of the special metal bond, the grinding wheel has excellent wear resistance and can maintain the sharpness of the grinding wheel for a long time.

Moresuperhard have many different shapes grinding wheel for carbide tools grinding used on CNC machine, like 1A1, 1V1, 3A1, 11V9, 12V9, etc. We also can make hybrid bond diamond and CBN wheel.

Recently, one of our customers inquiry resin and hybrid diamond grinding wheel for producing new carbide tools (milling shaft tools) and for resharpenings on Anca grinding machine.
