What is Metallography?

Metallography refers to the chemical composition of metals or alloys and the physical and chemical states of various components inside the alloy.

The use of cutting discs in the metallographic industry is: from hard cutting soft to soft cutting hard, and then hard cutting hard, as follows:

Plastics, rubber – non-ferrous metals, cast iron, stainless steel, tool steel – hardened steel, spring steel, bearing steel – alloy steel, heat treated steel – sintered material, ceramics, silicon wafers,  quartz, and cement.

However, there are many types of cutting discs used in the metallographic industry, such as :

*  Silicon carbide cutting disc: 100*12.7*0.35mm metal material for cutting non-ferrous metals, such as alloy

*  Aluminum oxide cutting blade: 100*12.7*0.35mm for cutting ferrous metal materials, such as steel

*  Metal diamond cutting disc: 100*12.7*0.35mm for cutting crystal, ceramic and plastic materials

Metal diamond cuttin disc is used for cutting metallographic samples. All cutting discs are made of optimized special abrasives, which are not easy to break; the cutting is sharp, the cutting heat is extremely small, and the heat-affected layer of the sample is shallow, thereby minimizing interference and providing the next step for metallographic sample preparation. One step provides the perfect premise. According to the different materials to be cut, the correct choice of cutting discs can improve the cutting efficiency and minimize the damage to the sample.

Generally speaking, metallographic cutting discs are made of alumina or silicon carbide using resin or other bonding materials. Different cutting materials can be selected for cutting work, and aluminum oxide cutting discs are suitable. For iron-based metals, silicon carbide cutting discs are suitable for non-ferrous-based metals and minerals. In addition, different bonding strengths will have different cutting performances.

Recently, one of our Indian customer inquired about metallographic cutting discs, he is engaged in the production of laboratory quartz ware industry. The main

products are experimental test tubes, volumetric flasks, experimental beakers, etc.

After communicating with the factory technician, I learned that according to the size given by the customer, there is a high probability that it is metallographic cutting.

Because the metallographic cutting disc is thinner than the general wet grinding wheel disc, for example, the thickness of the 300mm diameter aluminum oxide general

disc is 3.2-3.8mm thick, and the metallographic disc is 1.5-2mm thick. The thinner is to better control the cutting stress during cutting. The resulting plastic deformation

of the material structure can also better control the accuracy of the cutting position.

What is the difference between metallographic cutting disc and an ordinary cutting disc?

1. Thickness of cutting disc: Metallographic cutting discs thinner than general wet grinding wheel disc. For example, the thickness of 300mm diameter aluminum oxide general discis 3.2-3.8mm

the thick, and the metallographic disc is 1.5-2mm thick. The thinner is for better cutting control The plastic deformation of the material structure caused by the cutting stress during the feeding can also better control the accuracy of the cutting position.

2. Elasticity of the cutting disc: the elasticity of the metallographic discs better than that of the general-purpose disc. Better elasticity can better buffer the plastic deformation of the sample tissue caused by the feed load, and it is more flexible to adapt to the constantly changing cutting speed to adapt to the metallographic cutting. Variation of cutting torque output.

3. High-efficiency film and precision film: Metallographic film is also subdivided into high-efficiency film and precision cutting film according to the difference in cutting accuracy. The resin content of the precision cutting film is higher and the elasticity is better, and the thickness of the cutting film is thinner.
